What Is Melt Value? (And How It’s Calculated)
You’ve probably seen the term “melt value” tossed around anytime silver coins come up, especially if you’re weighing whether to sell. It sounds technical, but the idea behind it is simple. Melt value is just what a coin’s raw precious metal would be worth if it were melted down and sold as bullion, with no credit given for its age, design, or rarity. For a lot of circulated silver coins, melt value is the real floor price. Understanding how it’s calculated helps you know what you’re actually holding before you decide to sell it, keep it, or have it graded.
What Does “Melt Value” Actually Mean?
Every coin has a few different kinds of worth. There’s face value, which is whatever denomination is stamped on it (a quarter is worth 25 cents, no matter what it’s made of). There’s melt value, which is tied strictly to the metal content. And there’s numismatic value, which is what collectors will pay based on condition, mint mark, and rarity. Melt value only cares about one thing: how much actual silver is in the coin, and what that silver is worth right now. Two coins from completely different years and mints can have the exact same melt value if they contain the same amount of silver, even if one is far more desirable to a collector than the other.
The Melt Value Formula
The math behind melt value is straightforward once you break it down. You need three numbers: the coin’s weight, its silver purity (also called fineness), and the current spot price of silver.
Melt Value = Coin Weight (in troy ounces) × Silver Purity × Spot Price per Troy Ounce
A quick note on units, since this trips people up. Precious metals are priced by the troy ounce, not the standard ounce used for everyday weighing. A troy ounce is about 31.1 grams, slightly heavier than the 28.35 grams in a regular ounce. Coin weights are usually listed in grams, so the first step is converting that weight into troy ounces before you multiply by the spot price.
Silver purity is expressed as a percentage or a decimal, like .900 fine for 90% silver. Multiply the coin’s total weight by that purity to find out how much of the coin is actually silver, versus the copper or other metals mixed in for durability.
Melt Value by Coin Type
Not all “silver coins” contain the same amount of silver, which is exactly why this formula matters instead of just guessing. Here’s how the most common US silver coins break down.
Dimes, quarters, and half dollars minted in 1964 or earlier are 90% silver, with the remaining 10% copper. A pre-1965 quarter weighs about 6.25 grams, so roughly 5.63 grams of that is silver.
Kennedy half dollars from 1965 through 1970 are the odd ones out. They dropped to 40% silver as the Mint began phasing silver out of circulating coinage, so they contain noticeably less precious metal per coin than their 90% predecessors.
Coins minted from 1965 onward, including modern dimes, quarters, and Kennedy half dollars after 1970, contain no silver at all. They’re a copper-nickel clad composition and have essentially no melt value beyond face value.
This is why collectors and sellers often use the term “junk silver” for common-date, well-worn 90% coins. They’re not worth grading or collecting individually, but their silver content still makes them worth more than face value.
A Worked Example
Let’s walk through an actual calculation. Say you have a pre-1965 Washington quarter and silver is trading at $30 per troy ounce (spot prices move constantly, so always check a live quote before doing this for real).
The quarter weighs 6.25 grams and is .900 fine. First, find the silver weight: 6.25 grams × 0.900 = 5.625 grams of pure silver. Next, convert that to troy ounces: 5.625 ÷ 31.1 = about 0.1809 troy ounces. Finally, multiply by the spot price: 0.1809 × $30 = roughly $5.43.
That means at a $30 spot price, a single pre-1965 silver quarter carries a melt value of about $5.43, more than 21 times its 25-cent face value. Run the same math on a Roosevelt dime or a Kennedy half dollar and you’ll get different results, since each has a different weight and, in the half dollar’s case, a different purity depending on the mint year.
Melt Value vs. Collector Value
Here’s the part that’s easy to overlook: melt value is a floor, not a ceiling. A coin in rough, heavily worn condition is usually worth close to its melt value and not much more, since there’s little left for a collector to appreciate. But a coin with a rare date, a low mintage, an interesting mint error, or exceptional uncirculated condition can be worth many times its melt value to the right buyer. Before assuming a coin is only worth its silver content, it’s worth checking whether the date, mint mark, or condition make it something a collector would pay a premium for. Once you’ve ruled that out, melt value gives you a solid, honest baseline for what the silver itself is worth.
